Call to Order and Introductory Remarks

Meeting called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Chairman Miles. After a brief self introduction and introduction of Secretary Mr. O’Farrill, the Chairman thanked the parents and director at Hollywood Hills High for hosting today’s meeting.

The Chairman informed the members of the FBA’s change of the word "Festival" to "Performance Assessment" in order to remain current with educational thought and to convey the importance of our evaluations to others.

Unfinished Business

  • Board Action – Middle School sight reading classification change, see latest board minutes on the FBA web site
  • State Solo & Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Auxiliary Assessment is April 1, 2, 3; site TBA
  • Solo & Ensemble medals are changing from pewter to brass due to cost.
  • Concert, Jazz and S&E certification classes will be offered September 8-9 at UCF; October 13-14 in Miami, site TBA; November 29 – December 2 at FSU. See the FBA website for pre-registration forms. Future dates will include classes at the FMEA convention and FBA Summer Convention
  • There was a brief discussion on a state proposal to eliminate sight reading at state assessment and adding a short clinic instead. Membership approves.
  • The state proposal to post the pitches for tympani on the outside of the sight reading folders was discussed. Membership is opposed.
  • Mr. Duane Hendon, Executive Director, recommended that the members read the Classification Study Committee report and be prepared to discuss it at our next meeting. The Board wants our feedback.

    Audition Fee of $10.00 per entry is due at the same time (payable to FBA District 15)

  7. Small School Honor Band and 7th & 8th Grade Honor Band $15.00 per school nomination fee. Completed form is sent to appropriate Chairman as listed.
  8. Marching Performance Assessment

Saturday October 27th, Lockhart Stadium
Entry Forms due to Chairman by October 1, 2001, and special requests. Do it Now!
No check is needed at this time….. Classifications form must be on file
Festival Assistance by Middle School Directors is a must.

  • Motion: Cole/Rubio to charge $3.00 per Happy-Gram with a limit of 20 per school. Happy-Grams will be sold on site and have a 15 word limit each. PASSED
  • Motion: Charles/Parsons to not read the percussion and auxiliary rating at Marching Performance Assessment retreat. PASSED
  • Motion: Charles/Williams to allow marching bands to use a personal announcer instead of the standard announcement currently used. FAILED
  • The University of Miami Million Dollar Band will perform at this year’s FBA Marching Band Assessment.
  • All County Music will print tickets for this year’s FBA Marching Band Assessment.
  • Directors are encouraged to use the purchase of ads in the Marching Band program as a fundraiser and to promote their bands. Programs will be produced by John Rusnak and the Stoneman Douglas band parents.
  • A committee was formed to study the logistics and possibility of scheduling jazz bands to perform in a block/clinic situation during their evaluations. Committee members are John Rusnak, John Nista, Sean Hartmetz, Rick Miles, and Alan O’Farrill. Contact a committee member if you have input.
  • Motion: Charles/Jenkins to keep the same system used in the past to record bands at evaluations. PASSED
  • Microphones and stands for recording all-state auditions will be provided by All-County Music.
  • Heston Curry will be calling on directors to borrow their TASCAM double cassette decks to record all-state auditions.
  • Sunset High School will again video tape bands at FBA Marching Band Evaluations. Champion Photo will photograph bands after their performance.

Correspondence

Northeast HS requests permission to perform for comments only at the band performance assessments this year. Motion to accept Miles/Parsons. PASSED

Nova HS is not fielding a marching band beginning this year and requests to not be evaluated at the marching band performance assessment. Motion to accept Schmidt/Salo. PASSED

Music T’s requested permission to sell t-shirts at Marching Band Performance Assessment. Membership voted to NOT ACCEPT.

Good of the Association

  • McArthur has uniforms to give away. Contact Heston Curry.
  • Joe Luechauer, Music Curriculum Supervisor, advised the membership to be on the look out for new policies and procedures that may change the way we do things.
  • Dayna Cole at Pembroke Pines Charter School needs instruments. Any condition accepted.
  • Nova HS has Color Guard equipment to give away. Contact Jamie Roth.
  • Fred Schiff announced All County Music’s November 4th Anniversary Celebration. All County is sponsoring an appearance of the Airmen of Note at American Heritage on April 19th. Broward County’s own Brian MacDonald is playing lead trumpet with this band.
  • Neil Jenkins expressed a huge thank you to Lily Humphreys for her help with FBA activities. A round of applause followed. Neil also warned members to watch for "Fair Shares" as it pertains to band fees.
  • Duane Hendon announced that a festival program update will soon be available for download from the FBA website.
  • Western HS is having a concert on the green on May 18th. Contact Ingrid Larragoity to participate.
  • Ron Petroff is proud father to a new baby girl.
  • Deerfield Beach H.S. marching band contest is being held Oct. 13. See Larry Brewer for info.
  • Alan Finn at Coral Springs Charter School needs instruments.
  • Stan D’mitrenko’s wife Cynthia is opening a fabric shop on September 7th in Tamarac.
  • Robert Vagi is at Interlochen.
