None.

ITEM NO.5. – READING OF COMMUNICATIONS

Dr. Steven Kelly will replace M.S. Sight-reading adjudicator Mike Mitchell for this year’s district evaluation.

ITEM NO.6. – UNFINISHED BUSINESS

The board is considering excluding Sight-reading from the state concert evaluation in place of having one of the adjudicator’s give verbal comments to the performing groups.  District 10 membership is in high favor of this.

Further discussion of the pros and cons of the Musgrave proposal of self-classification took place for the third time in this setting. The district 10 membership recommends a district level choice as opposed to the state choice of classification – the reasons being that the individual districts know better the circumstances of the various school programs within the district. The band FTE count should be the rule instead of the school FTE count – the school size has little, if nothing, to do with the size of the band program within the school; likewise, the school size has nothing to do with the various contributing factors of the quality of the band program within the school.  In addition the bands should have the ability to re-classify after January due to schools that have block scheduling.

ITEM NO.7. – COMMITTEE REPORTS

None.

ITEM NO.8. – NEW BUSINESS

Membership turned in all Concert and Solo & Ensemble forms, disks and checks to Michelle Couch to be processed and scheduled by Betty Jo Couch.

Thank you so much Doug for this service over the past few years.  You may contact Doug with your full program information at HarrisD2@brevard.k12.fl.us.  Directors will have the opportunity to have their performances recorded by Chuck Brooker from West Side Elementary School.  The C.D.’s will be $12.00 each.  All directors are encouraged to buy at least one copy.  All students from your programs are invited to purchase copies at the site.   Directors may also bring a blank cassette, DAT, or C.D. to have one copy recorded on the host school equipment as well.  This recording would be for the directors to be able to give immediate feedback of the evaluation performance.

MOTION: Nelson/Schleicher  To hold District 10 Solo & Ensemble Festival on February 14&15, 2003.  PASSED.

After discussion of at least one other district in Florida having a combined Middle School and Sr. High Concert Evaluation, this district also favored the idea.  The catalyst for this would be that the performance schedule would include each school feeder chain from middle through high school groups to the best of the scheduling ability.  Each school in the chain would be able to hear the others within their chain during the evaluation process.  This would bring more audience for all included in the chain and each school within the chain would be able to hear the progress throughout (hopefully).  Mark Nelson will inquire of the other district to find out the scheduling details etc.  In addition a committee to acquire adjudicator’s for this type of event will consist of Michael Waller, Mark Nelson, David Ammerman and Jim Matthews.

MOTION: Smith/Allen  To hold a District 10 combined Middle School and Sr. High Evaluation on March 12-15 2003.  PASSED.

ITEM NO.15. – GOOD OF THE ASSOCIATION

Mr. Schwindt discussed an opportunity that another Florida district is doing to help improve not only each band in the district, but each individual director as well.  The idea is to have one band program a month/week volunteer to host an evening which would include: a one hour rehearsal by one of their bands, after which the band members would be released to go home, followed by a dinner for the director’s and a comment session with written and verbal notes on how the director might improve various aspects of rehearsing, conducting etc.  The membership is very interested in this and put together a committee to research this and possibly host one before the end of this school year.  The committee: Michael Waller, Doug Harris, Jim Matthews and Eric Saidat.

Doug Harris and the Palm Bay Band Boosters will be hosting a Jazz Festival with guest performers on April 13, 2002.  Please contact Doug if you are interested in bringing your jazz bands.
