The meeting was called to order at 6:56 p.m. by Ian Schwindt, district 10 Chairman. MOTION – Smith/Broadway - To dispense with the reading of the previous minutes - PASSED. TREASURER’S REPORT – Gate receipts from the H.S. Marching Festival were good but short of the amount from last year. This was partially due to the cold and windy weather. ANNOUNCEMENTS – Mr. Schwindt thanked the many directors and organizations for their help with the Marching Festival and the All-State audition process. Thomas and Laura Singletary for hosting the all-state auditions. Doug Harris and Carrie Giordano for hosting and organizing the marching festival. Once again, they did an outstanding job hosting. Benjamin Gary for timing all of the bands. Mark Nelson for hiring all of the judges and advising the chairman/secretary. Michelle Couch and the Stone M.S. Band and Charles Darius and the Southwest M.S. Band for providing the Star Spangled Banner to open the event. OLD BUSINESS- Mr. Schwindt read a letter from the Principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, which concerned the possibility of changing the order of performances for marching festival. Much discussion took place about various methods of rotation for performance other than by classification and size of band. MOTION – Harris/Arrouet – At the first meeting of next year we will have a drawing for performance times. – PASSED. DISCUSSION - Discussion took place about the district purchasing a couple sets of walkie-talkies to help administer festivals and auditions processes. Everyone present was in agreement on this. MOTION - To do away with the adjudicator’s dinner break and replace with two evenly placed 15-minute breaks. Therefore, there would be five bands, 15-minute break, five bands, 15-minute break and the last five bands. PASSED. Suggestions for adjudicator’s for next marching festival: (please forgive spelling) Fred Fenney – color guard, Bill Reincke – Apopka, Chris Bonner, Bentley Shellahamer – FSU, Thomas Fraschillo –Southern Miss., Cindy Berry-Lake Brantley, Ken Nickse, Patrick Dunnigan-FSU, Jeff Jordan-Olympia H.S.
NEW BUSINESS - Attendance is encouraged at the F.M.E.A. Convention. Directors should get hotels booked a.s.a.p. The Small Schools Honor Band ticket order was omitted from the order form. Please visit the web site for ticket application. Directors are encouraged to apply for professional leave a.s.a.p. for the convention. District 10 Solo and Ensemble Festival will be held on Feb. 15&16, 2002 at Satellite H.S. Use the disk for signing up. New director’s contact someone in your feeder chain to find out the information and how to use the program. The deadline for the forms (disk) is the next F.B.A. meeting January 23rd. The district chairman will collect everything at the meeting. Don’t forget that the front page of the forms with the director’s signature and principal’s signature must be printed out and signed before turning in. Doug Harris will again acquire the pianos for S& E. FBA District 10 High School Concert Festival will be held at Astronaut High School. Doug Harris will provide the programs. FBA District 10 Middle School Concert Festival will be held at Eau Gallie High School on March 15&16. Chuck Brooker (pending) will provide recording services of concert festival. He will record c.d.’s of each band. Forms to follow. Also, a tape recorder should be set up in case you want to have your band cassette recorded as well so you can take it home that day. Photographers same as last year will also snap shots from the balcony immediately following bands performance on stage. Middle schools bands - Reminder that last year the district voted to allow an adjudicator to come up on stage and give comments to the band immediately following the picture with the allotted time permitting. Central State H.S. Concert Festival will be held on April 29, 30 May 1, and 2, 2002 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. State Solo & Ensemble Festival is April 1,2,3 2002 at Bartram Trails High School. Great discussion took place about the classification process for festival, which will be voted on at the next board meeting. Our district is not in agreement about this entire subject. It is about one third in favor of directors’s choosing their own classification, one-third not in favor, and one third undecided. Ian appreciates the solidarity from our district. It makes his job of voting much easier! MOTION – Sullivan/Harris- To allow Holy Trinity to not participate in district concert festival this year. (Motion was out of order, and referred to state office). NOMINATIONS FOR ADJUDICATOR’S LIST – (Hand written votes were taken) MOTION – Sullivan/Fayard – Nominate Bill Henley for Adjudicator Internship Process in Marching, Concert, Jazz, and Brass S&E. PASSED. MOTION – Sullivan/Fayard – Nominate Russ Weaver to Adjudicator Internship Process in Jazz and W.W. S&E. PASSED. SUGGESTIONS FOR CLINICS COMMITTEE – Have Peter Blair from Warner Bros. Do a panel discussion on music arranging. Have Jim Croft do his New Wine in Old Bottles clinic. Larry Clarke – from Carl Fischer do a music clinic. Funding Grants & Corporate Sponsorships. Jaimey Ambersold Improvisation for Concert Bands Clinic. PROPOSALS TO THE BOARD – None GOOD OF THE ASSOCIATION – Kissimmee Jazz Festival open to Brevard bands as well. Information to follow. If you are interested contact Russ Weaver. April 13th Jazz Festival hosted by Doug Harris at Palm Bay High School to include middle schools jazz bands as well. Guest clinicians will be in attendance.
