Call to Order and Introductory Remarks

Meeting called to order at 9:07 a.m. by Chairman Miles. The Chairman thanked the parents and directors at Charles W. Flanagan High for hosting today’s meeting.

Treasurer’s Report

Briefly read by Mr. Miles. We have roughly $36,000 operational funds available.

Communications

From Lockhart Stadium for next year’s Marching Band P.A., charging us $2,500 plus 5% of the gate and only offering us our choice of a Sunday, Wednesday or Thursday. The chairman highly recommends another site. Please submit a letter if you have a suitable site and would like to host.
Letters from South Broward H.S., University School of Nova M.S., Piper High #2 Band, American Heritage H.S. and M.S. and a verbal request from Ft. Lauderdale H.S. (letter to follow ASAP) requesting to perform for Comments Only at Concert P.A. were accepted. Motion: McClain/Cole to approve. PASSED

Committee Reports

The chairman explained, in detail, a proposed clinic format for Jazz Band P.A. as follows: All bands are assessed by 3 adjudicators while a 4^th adjudicator is in clinic with the previous band. Adjudicator # 4 then returns to the panel for the next band while one of the assessing adjudicators leaves to clinic the band leaving the stage. Motion: Cole/ Rubio to hire a 4^th adjudicator and implement this format. PASSED

New Business

Middle School entry disk, entry forms and check are/were due January 31^st. Late fee $50. After the 8^th day, $100 fine. On the 15^th day or later, no entry forms will be accepted.
High School Jazz Band Performance Assessment- February 14- Nova High School.

High School Solo and Ensemble Performance Assessment- February 15^th and 16^th- Taravella H.S. Middle School Jazz Band Performance Assessment- February 28^th- Stranahan High School.

Middle School Solo and Ensemble Performance Assessment- March 1^st and 2^nd- Silver Trail M.S. (south site) Ramblewood M.S. (north site).

Programs for band events will be printed by All- County Music.
Recording will be done by volunteers as in the past, with no charge to bands.
Members were reminded by the chairman and President Jenkins to adhere to the title change deadline. 10 days before festival.
There was much discussion on the festival scheduling program.

State Festival Dates and Sites

S&E Auxiliary, and Jazz- April 1- 3 at Bartram Trail H.S. in Jacksonville

Concert Bands- April 24- 27 at Cypress Lake SOTA in Fort Myers.

Election of Officers

John Nista was nominated by Steve Salo for the office of District 15 secretary for 2002- 2004. Motion: Charles/Jenkins to the accept nomination. PASSED. No other candidates were nominated. Congratulations to John Nista, our new secretary.

Assessment Dates for Next Year

Motion: Parsons/ Curry to hold the District 15 Marching Band P.A on Nov. 2^nd. PASSED

Motion: Dorfman/ David to use Oct. 26^th as a back up date for Marching Band P.A if a suitable site is not available on November 2^nd, but available on Oct. 26^th. PASSED

Members who have suitable sites and wish to host should submit a letter to the chairman by the next meeting.

It was agreed that corresponding dates from this years H.S. and M.S. Jazz and S&E will be used for next year.

Motion: Lieberman/ ? to hold M.S. Concert Band P.A on April 9- 12 with April 2- 5 as back up if spring break becomes an issue. PASSED

Motion: Charles/ Curry to hold H.S. Concert Band P.A on March 19- 22 with March 12- 15 as back up if FCAT conflicts. PASSED

The dates for next years events are:

Marching Band 11/2 or 10/26 depending on suitable site

High School Jazz 2/13, Solo and Ensemble 2/14 and 2/15.

Middle School Jazz 2/27, Solo and Ensemble 2/28 and 3/1

High School Concert 3/19- 22 and 3/12- 15 pending FCAT schedule

Middle School Concert 4/9- 12 or 4/2- 5 pending Spring Break Schedule

Nominations for Adjudicators List

None

Nominate Clinicians for All- State Bands

Dr. Hill from Mercer University for 9^th and 10^th grade band

Anthony Williams from Broward County for the 7^th and 8^th grade honor band

Dr. Brown from Maurice Brown for the Jazz Band

Frank Battisti from New England Conservatory for 11^th and 12^th grade band

Proposals to the Executive Board

Suggestion for Committees: Just as the handbook addresses a procedure for individual members to address concerns to committees, that a set procedure needs to be put in place for committees to respond to individual concerns. (As it stands, many concerns go to committee and remain unanswered.

Suggested Format For Response:

A letter of acknowledgement to include that the concern was received and a date when committee members will meet to discuss
A written response from the committee including conclusions and findings of the committee

Good of the Association

FBA President, Neil Jenkins, spoke earlier in the meeting to inform the members of the value of summer convention. It will be in Altamont Springs this year. He also praised members from Broward and formally from Broward: John Nista, guest conductor for the 2003 Middle School All-State Honor Band; composer, Eric Morales and New Hall of Fame inductee, Cindy Berry.
Fred Schmidt After many successful years serving the state as All-State selections committee head, is stepping down. Neil also reminded adjudicators to attend one of the certification seminars when possible.
Nikk Palato is working on a list of private instructors for all the instruments. Please send him info. He also requests orchestra music. Contact him at Taravella H.S.
Thank you to all South area directors and guest conductor Terry Gladfelter for a successful event.
John Aiello is back at work after oopen heart surgery.
On September 11, 2002 a work by Brian Balmages will be premiered by the Flanagan Band
McArthur H.S still has uniforms to give away
The BCC Monday night concert band needs tuba players
