Item 3 – READING OF PREVIOUS MINUTES
Chairman Chiarito stated that if there were no corrections to the minutes, they should stand as printed.
Item 4 – TREASURER’S REPORT
Chairman Chiarito reported that our district was in great financial shape. We were way under budget this year which meant that
next year’s assessments would be much lower. After sending approximately $7,000 to FBA for state assessments, we should be left with around $12,000 in our account. We will be working to put together the proposed budget for 2002-2003 in the very near future.
Item 5 – READING OF COMMUNICATIONS / ANNOUNCEMENTS
There were no communications to be read and no announcements.
Item 6 – UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Chairman Chiarito reminded the membership that they should have picked-up several items upon arriving at the meeting. This included adjudicator evaluation forms and concert music performance assessment results. The adjudicator evaluation forms should be completed and returned to either Chairman Chiarito or sent to Bentley Shellahammer. The membership discussed District Solo & Ensemble Festival. Chairman Chiarito stated that there were many positive comments made regarding scheduling accompianists in the same room. The only concern voiced was that one judge receiving many students from the same school could create a problem under certain situations. The membership also made comments on Concert MPA. Nick Kozar asked if there were some way that we could make sure that our scheduled date doesn’t conflict with the Choral MPA as it did this past year. Jim Knight also discussed the difficulty that many high school bands experienced with the scheduling of FCAT testing on the week of Concert M.P.A.. The point was made that we need to check next year’s FCAT testing dates with our scheduled Concert MPA date.
Item 7 – COMMITTEE REPORTS
The special committee created at the January meeting reported to the membership regarding their findings as to steps that our district needs to take to help our members serve in leadership positions at the state level. Points were made regarding the geographical disadvantage that we had in this part of the state and that the road to state leadership lies in our willingness to serve on state-level committees. According to the FBA By-laws, the committees should consist of members from each of the geographical districts. We need to strive to get on these committees now because the incoming FBA President will soon be selecting the committee chairpersons. We should also strive to have members selected as clinicians for the All-State Bands, aspire to have one of our members serve as the Junior High Representative, and have one member on the nominating committee. The suggestion was made that we should also make an effort to invite some of the state-level leadership to adjudicate at our district MPA’s so that they can get to know the directors in this area of the state. There was a general consensus that this matter wasn’t an "us against them" situation, but that our membership needed to step-up, volunteer, and be proactive at the state level. Anyone interested in volunteering to serve on a committee was asked to contact Glenda Jones.
Item 8 – NEW BUSINESS
Chairman Chiarito discussed the proposals made by other districts that will be voted on at the next executive committee meeting. He took a straw poll from the membership on each proposal.
