This workshop is centered on the belief that all people are musical, demonstrated by leveraging the musical choices of the individual. This is achieved through performance of modern band music – culturally relevant music of students taught through approximation, music acquisition theory, and social equity. Participants will learn to play ukulele through popular music, focusing on reading through iconographic notation, utilize improvisation, and demonstration

Dr. Bryan Powell 

Little Kids Rock
Director of Higher Education Initiatives

Dr. Bryan Powell an Assistant Professor of Music Education and Music Technology at Montclair State University. Prior to joining Montclair State University, Bryan served as the Director of Higher Education for Little Kids Rock, and the Interim Director of Amp Up NYC, a partnership between Little Kids Rock and Berklee College of Music. Bryan is a founding principal editor of Journal of Popular Music Education and also serves as the Executive Director of the Association for Popular Music Education. Bryan is the current Chair for the NAfME Popular Music Education SRIG and is and International Affiliate for Musical Futures.
