In the urban school setting, popular music can be a “point of access” to teaching children musical skills and concepts. Children identify and connect with pop songs. When carefully selected, pop songs can help connect children to musical concepts and skills in a meaningful way.

Teacher
Thomas Pierre is a National Board Certified Music Teacher, holds Orff Schulwerk certification, and is a 2020 CMA Music Teachers of Excellence National Award recipient. He has taught vocal, general and choral music at all grade levels. Mr. Pierre is currently a vocal music teacher in the DC metropolitan area, board member of the Maryland Music Educators Association and the Middle Atlantic Chapter of AOSA, and serves on the AOSA Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee and Restructuring Committee. Mr. Pierre has led workshops nationally and internationally focusing on closing the achievement gap in urban education through the arts.
